The Gin & Tonic Racers

East London gentry James Rutt and Lloyd Morgan take on the 2012 Rickshaw Run. Starting in Cochin, Kerrala in the south to Shillong, in the north eastern tip of India, covering anywhere between 2500km - 3500 km in a very unrealistic yet hopeful 14 days.

The vehicle of choice is the humble Tuktuk, aka the Rickshaw. A 149 cc 3 wheeled pram. Capable of just 55 kph, limited legally to 45 kph (it they're watching). Used mostly in the city's of Asia,  not even the Indians push them to this extreme.

Mountains, jungles and river deltas are just some of the hurdles our trusty stead will have to rise to, Ourselves however will have Indian traffic, bandits, tigers and mosquitos to contend with. With cricket bats under arm and Bombay gin and tonic in hand we dont anticipate any problems.

James, Oxford born, has a background in racing classic cars and has travelled the world experiencing many incredible things, this on the other hand will be the endurance race to rival any. In fact this may be the endurance race to end all  races! James 'the tonic' Rutt (dully named as he is un able to handle the gin) would put Terry Thomas to shame in a "well to do" line out! Like a thorough bred, He'll be representing the Raj on this epic adventure, making absolutely sure the English flag is flying high throughout the trip.

Lloyd "the Gin" Morgan, the Essex home grown Mockney has driven in similar adventures before, such as the Mongol rally, the Mototaxi junket across south america and his own Sri Lankan tuktuk adventures, each time telling all it would be his last adventure, mostly as he didn't think he'd survive. however, laughing in the face of adversity he's bounced back to challenge James on this next ridicules adventure raising money for more great charities.

The Charities

The charities this year will be the Frank water Project. FRANK Water funds sustainable clean water projects in developing countries across the world. Your support really matters. In a world where more than 4,000 children die EVERY DAY from a lack of clean drinking water, it's clear that help is urgently needed.

And our personally chosen charity this year, close to our own hearts will be the Alzheimer's Association. Lloyd's father had Alzheimer's, so he knows first hand how this terrible condition can affect loved ones. The Alzheimer's association is in constant research to try and find cures and medicines that can delay the onset of this debilitating and often terminal condition.

How can you help us?

In essence we want your money, none of which will fill our pockets, all donations go straight to the charities.  We will do (almost) anything to secure your sponsorship.

You could sponsor us to wear your face on our T-shirt, pay for your logo or picture to go the Tuktuk or make us do silly things at your request. Our world will be your oyster!

Let us know what you'd like us to do..

We are here. It's humid and hot like no where I've been before. Melting is an understatement. We were handed the keys to our rickshaw yesterday midday, by 2pm it was broken. Fortune shines on those who breakdown before the rally starts as repairs are free and as we type this a brand new clutch is being installed. PERFECT! Our stickers that were organised in the Uk have been an epic failure and we have employed a team of local artists/eager paint brush wielding men in sarongs who are happily bastardising our already ten coat think bodywork. On the upside we have installed a 1500watt sound system which is, loud. Very loud. Next on the list is halogen lights to blind everyone off the road. 2days till race start.

The Planning Begins

Flights

We fund all our own adventures and one of the biggest cost after actually taking time off is the flights, due to the nature of this very hap hazzard trip there needs to be contingency plans - infact no there doesnt, there never is.

We have  booked flights from LHR to Cochin via Dubai and we will return from Shillong with an internal flight to Calcutta then back via Dubai to LHR. So regardless of if we make it in our rickshaw, we still need to make it to fly home. No Pressure then!
